Training with Power
To get the most out of your cycling, you need to move from just riding to training. The first thing you need to make this work is a way to measure what you are doing. For many years this was with a cycle computer and heartrate monitor, but now we’ve gone a step further. While you can make reasonable progress using those tools, the way to maximize your progress is with a power meter. Training without power is like lifting weights without know how heavy it is. It’s a workout but you have no way of knowing how much the workload is.
Are you doing more than last week? Are you performing better?
Without a powermeter you have no way of actually knowing.
For reasons of reliability, ease of use and cost, I recommend the Cycleops Power Tap system. This hub-based power meter measures wattage, heartrate, cadence, speed, distance and time. Each workout is downloadable so you can analyze your training to track trends in your fitness.
