Fitting Testimonials

Clients feel a difference

Winston @ Cycle Cambridge has a healthy attitude to the relationship between a rider and the bike. Regardless of the discipline there is a fundamental understanding of the relationship between comfort and performance. There is a perception that a pro fit is only for serious riders and that amateur enthusiasts are relegated to upright riding positions and cushy seats. This is not the case with Winston. He took the time to understand my physiological strengths ( the few that were readily apparent) and my limitations ( too many to list at this time) to assess what I was looking to accomplish on the bike. The result after a number of iterations was a neutral fit that can be best described as effortless. My pedal stroke now has a fluidity that was sometimes experienced but never able to be maintained.

I have achieved a sense of balance on my mountain, road and TT bike that allow for easy transitions and an equal level of preference for the time spent on each. Winston emphasizes the quality of the contact points with the bike and is respectful of working within each riders budget and time frame to accomplish the best fit possible. If you’re looking to love the feel of you on your bike the I would strongly suggest a session with Winston to begin finding the fit that may range from a change in saddle angle to being measured up for a brand new bike. Good luck.

I was comfortable riding my old bike, but was experiencing some harsh lower back and shoulder pain after trying to replicate the fit for myself on a new machine. After a custom fit with Winston at Cycle Cambridge the back pain was gone, and, although the new riding position took some getting used to, I am confident the new riding position has made me a stronger rider and better bike handler. There must be something to it because within two months of the fitting I got my first O-Cup road race podium.

What a fit!!!

Winston is unequalled when it comes to bike fitting. My wife and I went to Cycle Cambridge believing that she would need a custom bike at a cost of more than $2,500. Winston took her measurements and looked at her current bike and said that he could make a custom bike but that he could also modify her current bike with a new fork, and seat post for less than $350. Cycle Cambridge replaced the fork and then we went into the shop for the fitting. At the fitting, Winston changed the width and height of her handlebars and changed the grips. He saw that it was not necessary to change the seat post or seat. So the total for the changes was less than $325. After every change, Winston had her get back on her bike and pedal so that he could recheck that the changes were improving her riding position; the whole process took about 1 hour.

In my case I had purchased a new bike from another shop, but I did not feel comfortable on it. Winston had me get on it and he realized that the drop out was slightly bent so that there was extra noise coming from the chain. He also saw that the width of the handlebars was incorrect for me and that they were mismatched for that frame size. He fixed the bend of the drop out and changed the width of the handlebars. He then went to work on making the bike fit me. He moved the seat back, changed the seat height, change the length of the stem, and changed the pedals and the cleat on my shoes. He kept making fine adjustments until the bike was a perfect fit for me. The fitting took about 2.5 hours and again Winston would not stop making adjustments until he was satisfied that my bike fit me perfectly.

My wife and I are extremely satisfied with the high level of customer service and level of detail provided by Cycle Cambridge. We highly recommend them.

“Win – went for a ride this am with two buddies – the 07 ORCA was friggin awesome. I could not believe how responsive it is – particularly on the climbs. Also – jump on the pedals and it flys.

I also noticed after two hours of rolling hills in a pretty good wind I did not feel the usual aches and strains – I guess there is some truth to the comfort of carbon.

More importantly is the fit, the bike feels like a comfortable t-shirt. I love it and forget its there as if the bike and I are one – it took a long time to feel that way on my old bike. Its all about fit and having the right expert to make it work. Winston, you did a great job setting me up on this bike. If I had buckets of cash I would not buy a different bike and I wouldn’t change a thing in the setup”

Thanks

Best regards

“Hey Win, just wanted to give you some feedback on the fitting I had the other night. First, I thought the level of service and the value I received were way above excellent : on those points alone I would recommend your shop/service to anyone.

On the fitting itself: initially, I was a bit confused “what did he do?” But, I gave you the benefit of my lack of knowledge and waited a few rides before I said anything. Wow. Immediately I felt more in control and more “in tune” with my bike. This, even though you moved me further back which I thought would have had the opposite effect. I seem to be producing more power (although I don’t have a power meter and I make this assumption based on my performance over the same routes I’ve done before.)

I don’t feel like I’m “falling” on the handlebars anymore which I did when I began to think was just because I was tall and had so much of my weight above the bike; not true at all. And, something completely unexpected. I’m sore. After rides that I wasn’t sore after before; I believe that this is because I’m recruiting more leg muscles into the pedal stroke (and my butt, etc) and I’m sure this will only help my performance after my body adjusts.

In short, I am extremely pleased with your service and completely confident in your fitting knowledge/abilities. I will continue to do support your shop and recommend it to my cycling friends.”

  1. I don’t know if Douglas Adams rode a bike, but I think he summarized Winston’s fitting best - “People tend to notice the things that don’t work, and take for granted the things that do”.

So I hardly noticed the fitting. Why would someone use the word comfort? Of course bikes are comfortable! Why wouldn’t they be? Especially after a 5 hour road ride. What do sore backs, numb hands, noisy knees have to do with biking? So what is the fuss about? Bikes are always comfortable. It’s is just the way it is. Why would anyone expect less?

But seriously, my first good road bike (purchased in a moment of poor inspiration elsewhere) was about as comfortable as a barbeque until Win sorted it out. Thought it was a waste of 2500 bucks, but a new stem, pedals, shoes and seat post got me on track.

Craig Gignac - cycle cambridge fitted since 2003. I think. It was a long time ago.

  2. Hi Winston - I wanted to follow-up with you after my bike fitting in your shop 2 weeks ago. All I can say is a BIG THANK YOU!!!! I now have a renewed love for my “half” bike (as you know, all the love really goes to the tandem!!). I no longer have shoulder and neck pain (typically felt within the first 10km of a ride), my hands are not sore from the constant pressure and I seem to be able to give more power to the pedals (I have actually seen an improvement in my average speed!). The adjustments made to the cleats on my shoes certainly work perfectly on the tandem as well. I did not imagine that it would have been as simple as new handle bars and stem, seat and cleat adjustments. So much for my mental list of reasons to justify a new bike purchase - you have given life to my older, previously ill-fitting, but now-perfectly fine half bike!!!

Your attention to detail, your excellent knowledge of bike/fit performance and of course, the excellent service, makes Cycle Cambridge #1 in my mind. You will be highly recommended at every opportunity!!

    Here’s to your continued success!!

    Regards,
