Cycle Cambridge isn’t just about the bike itself. Don’t get me wrong, I love bikes. I love getting you set up on the perfect bike for your needs, wants and desires, be they commuting, racing or just getting out with the kids. But more importantly, I’m passionate about where a bike can take you. Whether a physical destination or a metaphor for moving ahead in life, the bike has been the vehicle for many of the best journeys I’ve ever been on. If you were anything like me, your first bike gave you a taste of freedom. Being the master of your own destination is incredibly powerful.

I’m lucky enough to have made a career out of helping people of all ages discover this feeling, whether for the first time or rekindling the joy of being the captain of your self-propelled adventures. I see our role at Cycle Cambridge as not just to set you up with a great quality bike that suits your needs, but to also provide you tools to become a better cyclist. With that in mind we operate the shop with two simple rules 1) Run a shop we would want to shop at ourselves and 2) Help as many people as possible move from being bike owners to passionate cyclists.

Here are some of the things we do to help you on that path.

Free Lifetime Tune-up Warranty with all New Bikes

The best bike in the world is still a pain if it isn’t working properly. With our Tune-up Warranty we take call of all of your general bike tune-ups for as long as you own your bike. As often as you need we will adjust your brakes and gears, perform minor wheel truing and bearing adjustments, lube your drivetrain and cable, inflate your tires, and tighten all your nuts and bolts. If you didn’t buy your bike from us, this package would cost you $54.99 per visit.

Biomechanical Bike Fitting

This is one of the things we have become well known for. If your bike isn’t comfortable you won’t ride it very much. If you don’t ride much, you never become that passionate cyclist I was talking about. So we do something about it. Each rider is different, so they need their bike set up to match their body and current fitness. If you buy your bike from us the fitting is included no charge and if you bought it else where the price is reasonable. In fact it’s down right cheap compared to the cost of physiotherapy from overuse injuries. Numb hands, sore knees and crotch issue are all fit related and can be made to be distant memory with correct alignment on the bike. I’ve been working on solving peoples fit issues for over a decade and can probably improve your comfort and performance, like I have with hundreds of clients.

Junior Half-back program

Kids keep growing which means a new bike every couple of years. This can get pricey so rather than get them a department store bike, take advantage of our Junior Half-back Program. Here’s how it works. Buy any new junior bike from Cycle Cambridge and when your child outgrows it, trade it for up to half of what you paid for a new, properly sized bike. This way they can be on a safer, higher quality bike and you can save a bit of money in the process. As all of our bikes come with our Lifetime Tune-up Warranty, you don’t have to pay for regular maintainence for as long as you own the bike. As the kids bikes we sell are lighter and more reliable than the ones from the big box stores, your child is going to find riding easier and more fun, hopefully leading to a lifetime habit of healthy recreation.

PowerTap Testing and Training Center

When you want to take the step in improving your cycling performance, come see us. From fitness testing with Powertap power meters to full coaching programs, we specialize in helping people grow to their maximum potential on limited training time. In the offseason you can come in and do group rides on the trainers with other athletes, getting an effective workout that is also more fun than just riding the trainer in front of the tv. If you love cycling but have limited time to train due to work, family and other commitments, we can get you results.

By using a power meter and our cycling specific off-the-bike workouts, you are able to get the most out of your training. We have clients who compete on the national level while juggling work and family, some with as little as five hours a week to train. Make every training session pay off and get results you didn’t think you could on such little time per week.

• Custom Bike Building for road and mountain

Not to say that there aren’t good stock bikes, but nothing beats a custom build from the frame up. In the past when I would get a new bike I would be changing a pile of the stock parts from the stem and bar to gearing, tires and crank. Rather than having to go to that trouble, make your next bike a custom build with everything from frame color to wheels specced exactly to suit your riding style and personal taste.

With our custom bikes you have a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that all of your riding buddies will envy. If you have unique fitting needs a custom build is also the easiest way to guarantee a bike that will fit perfectly. With a blank canvass to work with, we have more options to get you dialled in for a comfortable, high powered ride.

Whether a touring rig to ride across Canada or a sleak racing machine to school the competition, we can bring your dreams to life at a very reasonable price.

Custom Builds are available on the following brands:

• Orbea
• Time
• Surly
• Opus

• 29″and Single Speed Mountain Bike Experts

While a lot of the bike industry is obsessed with full suspension bikes, we look outside the mainstream for unique ways to improve your offroad experience.

Why ride a 29er?
The big wheels roll over obstacles faster and smoother than 26” wheels because they have a lower angle of attack. In mud and sand, the 29”er doesn’t sink as much as a 26” wheel. The larger wheel size also creates a longer contact patch which results in improved traction for hill climbing and cornering. As well the higher axles on the 29” wheels make endos much less of a problem.

As well for taller riders, the increase in wheel size really helps keep the handling of the bike balanced. As frame size gets bigger the rider gets higher over the axles making the bike top heavy and endos more likely. As a side benefit the bike also looks better as you don’t have this huge frame with tiny looking wheels any more.

We carry 29″ wheel mountain bikes from Haro, Fisher, Opus, Surly and Orbea.

Why ride a single speed offroad?
Riding a single speed is the easiest way to improve your fitness, your riding skill and be faster. In fact if you give single speeding a shot you may just find your geared bike ends up collecting dust. By not having to think about gear choice you just ride. That’s where the fun comes from.

While there are many benefits to riding a single speed, the thing that has brought me to it is the new challenge it presents. After you’ve ridden th local trails to the point that you know what gear to be in going around every corner it time to spice things up by riding them with just one. All of a sudden riding is new again. You have to pick lines to hold momentum and accelerate into the bottom of hills rather than chunking down through the gears. In short you have to learn to ride again. Every trail is new with fun new challenges that weren’t there with gears. Plus you will get mad respect when you blow past your riding buddies on the uphills with only one gear.

We carry single speed mountain bikes from Haro, Fisher, Surly and Soma.

• Cycling Club and Performance Race team

One of the best things about cycling is doing it with other people. That’s why we started group rides 15 years ago and keep working to improve them every year. Our club is dedicated to helping cyclists of all levels improve and have fun.

As with most sports, competition drives innovation. Be it equipment, training and tactics, the fire of the race tests and hones the effective from the inefficient. Bike racing is a beautiful metaphor for real life as it takes place out in the world not in a climate controlled stadium or rink. Weather, road and trail conditions, missing a bottle hand off and flat tires are just a few of the things that get thrown at you when your out competing. A moment of inattentiveness can mean getting dropped from with pack with a fruitless chase using all of your remaining energy. Or you can get rewarded for being in the right place at the right time and jump in the break-away that sticks to the end.

Our race team, Cycle Cambridge/GRG Racing is a group of individuals who share a passion for pushing their limits and love to go fast. Our goals are to prepare to the best of our abilities and represent our sponsors proudly. Plus putting the hurt on the competition is a sweet bonus.
